Outcome Based Forestry Overview

Our most current report card for the 1,255,000 acres that we own in Northern Maine is available here.

The work of our forestry team in Maine complies with the Maine Forest Service’s (MFS) Outcome Based Forestry (OBF) law that requires our operations be ecologically sustainable, economically viable, and socially responsible.

"It's about holding ourselves accountable to the people of the state of Maine. Making sure that we're economically viable operators, we're taking care of our communities, providing jobs, and that we're also taking care of the environment. That's the really great thing about Outcome Based Forestry, it's about ensuring sustainability for future generations," said Ked Coffin, Regional Forester.

Highlights of the report include:

  • 2.95 million trees planted in Maine in 2018
  • 256 sites being conserved by our Unique Areas Program
  • 122,000 acres of deer wintering habitat
  • Over 2,700 jobs (direct, indirect and induced)
  • Over $100 Million in total wages (direct, indirect and induced)
  • Over $100 million in local Maine purchases
  • $87 Million in Capital Investment (2012-2016)

Today, our Maine woodland’s are certified to meet the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C041515) and the  Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) forest certification systems. This most current report card confirms ZERO non-compliance issues for 145 audit criteria.
